I find it a little hard to believe that we have yet get so many movies deserving of 4K discs. Some of my most wanted include Dances with Wolves, The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, The Tree of Life, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Eyes Wide Shut, Memento, Insomnia (2002).

Love your stand for film and 4K upgrades in particular, Jeff! I've been following you for years now, and love your passion, thoughtfulness, and knowledge of movies. I've discovered many great ones I would have otherwise missed.

You have an awesome list, and for me #3, 4, and 8 were all on my list. I have other passionate requests for 4K too, as follows:

The Hunger

Basic Instinct

Angel Heart (A. Parker)

The Wall (A. Parker) - how is this not on 4K yet?! Probably a Roger Waters issue ;)

Most of the Woody Allen films (e.g., Midnight in Paris and Hannah & Her Sisters in particular)

Eyes Wide Shut (another one - how has it not been done yet, given the other Kubrick films that were done so well?!)

And the list goes on...!

Jeff you write very well. I'm impressed! And your choice for movies in this article would equal some some of my own (KING KONG, THIN RED LINE, MASTER & COMMANDER). Nice work!

Thank you! I was a writer first before I ever did videos! You’ll probably like my book!

Armageddon! Crazy fun movie that could have all cylinders firing with a Dolby Atmos setup.

Thankful we got Twister in 4K last year

Uhhh - Gone with the Wind?

I do not know, is that film still ok or has it been cancled?

But 100% would buy a 4K of Gone with the Wind, if it is not some $/€50 super collectors edition.

How can you cancel the highest grossing film (adjusted for inflation) of all time. There are a lot of films from that era with questionable racial politics that have received restorations. Its literally "Gone with the Wind" the fact that this hasn't been restored is a tragedy.

These days I have a hard time taking anything as save. But your word in gods ear. I would be looking forward to getting it restored in 4K.

Great list. And I know that this isn't a popular movie, but many of us would love to see Speed Racer in 4K with HDR or Dolby Vision. That would look amazing if done right.

Hi Jeff,

I enjoyed reading your list! The movie I dream about seeing in 4k is the uncut version of "Once Upon a Time in America." If I remember right, even more missing footage from Leone's workprint was recently found. Why can't Criterion put out a 4k box set of this amazing film? Also, I agree with you that "The Master" needs to be released in 4k. It's criminal how P.T. Anderson's movies have been neglected on blu-ray/4k. Once again, why can't Criterion put out a 4k box set of his films?

Wishing for Tombstone, Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn, Forbidden Planet, more John Wayne westerns including Chisum, Hondo and the Cowboys. Wouldn’t mind seeing The Shadow and Rocketeer with restored 4k transfers. I still think The Shadow could use a director’s cut to clean up and improve the end of that movie. There has to be more footage that was shot to make that happen. One of my guilty pleasures as I thought Alec Baldwin was perfect casting.

I agree on all of them with you! But for me Master and Commander stands out in particular. Now I'll have to watch it again tonight.

To add one suggestion: "The Hatefull Eight" If I remember correctly, it was shot in 70 mm or some large film format.

Also ordered the Blu-Ray of The Rock after reading your article, still hoping for a 4K release anyway.

It’s not even close: Excalibur. It’s a crime that this hasn’t been done.
