February 2025 Movie Roundup: What I Watched This Month
A breakdown of my favorite movies and TV shows I watched in February 2025, including Beverly Hills Cop, Alien Romulus, The Monkey, and more!
Welcome to a new monthly feature where I will break down my favorite movies and TV shows that I have watched each month throughout the year. If you want to follow along my movie-watching journey, make sure to follow me on Letterboxd and Instagram as well, as those are the best places to keep up on the daily!
For February of 2025, I had a slow month when it came to movies. The family was sick all month with different ailments ranging from the flu to ear infections to stomach bugs. It made a short month feel very long, and there were a lot of nights where my wife and I just went to bed instead of staying up to watch a movie. We did more TV shows and "mindless" watching of different TV channels just to have something on while we rested. However, I did get in a few great movies and TV shows, so let's talk about my favorites!
Beverly Hills Cop
Believe it or not, I had never seen this movie! After watching the SNL 50th Anniversary special and remembering how amazing Eddie Murphy is, I wanted to watch some more of his classics. This movie was a ton of fun to watch, and Eddie was incredible. I watched the 4K Blu-ray, which looked fantastic, with a great remastered transfer. Plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Tons of action. Just great chemistry in the cast. They seriously don’t make movies like this anymore! I can’t remember a great buddy comedy action movie since maybe The Nice Guys in 2016, which is a shame because it is a genre I love. I gave this 4/5 stars and really enjoyed it!
Babygirl
My wife and I watched Babygirl on Valentine's Day thanks to the amazing people at A24. As a member of their AAA24 service, I was given a free ticket to see Babygirl in the theater on Valentine's Day, but we were both sick and weren't able to go out. I emailed their concierge service asking if we could get a free rental instead, and they were cool enough to do that for us. I streamed this from the A24 app over our Apple TV and we had a good time. My wife is big into the "smut" (her word, not mine) books right now and she said this was as close to getting those books made into a movie as she had ever seen. She loved it, so if your wife is into that stuff, put this one on. For me, I gave it a 3/5. Nicole Kidman was amazing and the story was pretty intense and had me guessing, but I think it kind of fell apart a bit once the novelty wore off and it didn’t end very strongly. Either way, it was worth seeing and has plenty of *ahem* interesting moments. Good date night movie for sure!
Alien Romulus
Alien Romulus made me believe in IP movies again in the same way that Prey did when that released in 2022. If this is how IPs are handled, then Hollywood would be a lot better off. Fede Álvarez took a story and a world we know well and added unique elements, characters, and storytelling to create something that I think is the best Alien movie since Aliens, or maybe Prometheus, which I do love as well. It reminded me a lot of Rogue One from Star Wars, where we knew the story and likely knew the ending for most of the characters, but it took this intimate story and placed it in a massive universe to show us the more "human" side of a world we knew so well. He also brought a ton of amazing practical effects which made me fall in love with Alien all over again. I liked this a lot and gave it 4/5 stars. The 4K Blu-ray was also fantastic, and I would highly recommend that.
The Little Hours
I watched this on Kanopy after seeing their Instagram feed recommend it as a short, smart little comedy, and I am glad I did. Some of the humor could be hit or miss, but the idea of a comedy based on a 13th-century Italian story which focuses on a convent of raunchy nuns, priests, noblemen, and peasants was a lot of fun. What a miserable time to live, but that is what made it so funny. The cast is amazing too, with comedians like Aubrey Plaza, Alison Brie, Molly Shannon, John C. Reilly, Fred Armisen, Dave Franco, Kate Micucci, and Nick Offerman. In some more somber news, this was made by Plaza’s husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, who sadly passed away earlier this year. This movie deserves more eyes on it to honor him and his legacy, so I hope you will check it out. At under 90 minutes, it's the perfect movie for a weeknight where you just want to chill and have some laughs. And Fred Armisen steals the show, so if you like him, this is peak Fred Armisen!
The Monkey
I saw this in theaters on opening weekend, and although I enjoyed it and was very entertained, I expected more. This was a case of marketing hype selling me on something and not delivering, which I talked about in a recent blog post. I loved the comedy and the over-the-top gore and it was a fun movie, but it seemed like it was just missing something. The story dragged a bit at the end, and I never felt like we got that one "wow" moment or scene I was expecting. Maybe I am desensitized as someone who watches a lot of horror, maybe the marketing ruined it for me, or maybe I just wasn’t in the right mindset, as my audience was not too into it either. Anyway, it was fun, I gave it 3/5 stars, and I appreciate the shot that Oz Perkins took on trying something new and different. I will definitely be in theaters for his next one, Keeper, which was teased after The Monkey’s credits.
Band of Brothers
What a show. 5/5, maybe the best TV show of all time. I had never sat down and watched the whole thing start to finish before and I am so glad I have now. It’s like 10 hours of Saving Private Ryan, both with its great characters (real people technically), the storytelling, the production quality, and the cast. It is insane that this was made for TV and made in 2001 because it looks as good now as it did back then. If you told me this was done 2 years ago I would believe you. Episode 9 is one of the most harrowing episodes of TV I have ever watched, and the D-Day episode is a masterclass. I absolutely loved this show and I recommend everyone watch it, and watch it on Blu-ray if you can. I streamed a few and played a few on disc and the disc is by far the better experience, although the stream on Netflix wasn’t all that bad.
I Think You Should Leave
This is my comfort show. Some people watch The Office or Seinfeld or Friends. I watch I Think You Should Leave. Tim Robinson is an absolute genius and I cannot wait for what he does next. He has his first big movie coming from A24 this summer, called Friendship with Paul Rudd, and I will be seated on day one. For those who don’t know, I Think You Should Leave is a sketch comedy show on Netflix with three seasons of six episodes each. Each episode runs about 15 minutes and features 4-5 skits, so its the perfect show if you want something quick and easy to watch. It always has me laughing on the floor, even after seeing each episode a dozen times. It won’t be for everyone, as some of the comedy is pretty absurdist and dry and cringey, but I absolutely love it.
So that’s what I watched in February! Remember to follow me on Letterboxd and Instagram for all the latest updates, and let me know what you watched in the comments! I always love getting recommendations from others!
