A severe lesson in it not mattering who we are or where the truth lies because the bandwagon of society is so shiny it will fuck us if given the chance.
I think you should also check out Into The Deep - The Submarine Murder Case on Netflix (if It's still on there) it starts off quite normal following a guy building a submarine and turns really dark. Also tickled is my favorite and last night I had trouble trying to explain it to someone and making them want to watch it! David Ferrier is amazing as a journalist he goes to all lengths. I'm also a Dark Tourist fan.
This was such a great read! As someone who also loves creepy documentaries of all kinds, I thank you - a few of these I haven't seen and I'm adding them to my watchlist immediately. I was also soooo glad to see you mention Cropsey there toward the end; it's one I've watched several times and that never fails to leave me with a lingering sense of dread (so much so that I didn't actually realize it was nonfiction the first time I saw it... talk about falling down a rabbit hole...)
People here have named some of my favourites so l'll be more alternative. War documentaries and the killing of activists and journalists scare me the most, but I'll skip them and aim for something else foreign:
01 Collective (medical thriller 2020)
02 Welcome to Chechnya (gay-hunting 2019)
03 Dying to Divorce (shocking female abuse)
04 Skywalkers: A Love Story (acrophobia 2024)
Cold Case Hammarskjöld begins as a quirky and original history lesson in an assassination but heads to a scary clinic during apartheid. Another must-see!
'Tickled' is so off the edge of 'acceptable society' that it's one of my favourites. 'The Imposter' was psychologically fascinating, and 'Abducted in Plain Sight' disturbing and immensely frustrating. I'll find the other two.
Dear Zachary: a letter to his son about his father
my very first thought.
Brilliant movie.
Devistating
The best crime doccie!
It's a mockumentary horror flick but it's very well done, Lake Mungo. Definitely worth a watch.
I also enjoyed it.
Does the moment you're referring to in "Abducted in Plain Sight" involve the friend and dad in a car?
oh my god, I completely forgot about that part
Sorry to remind you...ugh
Capturing the Friedmans?

You caught my attention with the tickling one. I am so curious to know what it entails other than tickling
Go in cold. This one cannot survive spoilers. Be pleasantly surprised and captivated. Essential viewing.
Tickled is so good

There's a miniseries about it too.
Oh, really?! Iay have to check that out. If it's online I may be able to. Thanks.
UnAmerican, deliberately removing the spotlight and credit from the killer, and done in coperation with Kim Wall's parents - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7Sb0eMaSNs. Tobias Lindholm did a good feature called 'A Hijacking' but his script for 'The Hunt' is the best - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2106476/
I've seen The Hunt, a few ago now, it's brilliant and Mads again is incredible
Mads is!
I also loved him as Hannibal Lector.
Thanks so much for this info and those links Mike. I'll make some time for it soon.

I love this!
I actually want to learn more about the kid who disappeared in Imposter. It seems like his whole story has been clouded by the con artist.
No. Never convicted. Just a theory.
The real kid was murdered by his family.
Was he? I saw a true crime video about the case on Youtube not long ago and I wondered what happened to the kid.
As far as I know, yes. I think the older brother was finally charged and convicted a cpl years ago. Again, I’m not 100% on that.
For me, a documentary that still haunts me is Capturing the Friedman's. And, Cropsey. Yikes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGrD_vVE5bQ
American Nightmare was indeed a true nightmare 😬

Then there's 3/11: The First 3 Days, the Japanese showing the earthquake from their perspective. It's free viewing at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0E2Q7kr4L2c

Great recommendations! Thank you. Added a couple of these to my Letterboxd Watchlist.
Horror movies got nothing on documentaries lol
Great list
